Updated: 20/10/2004 Weather Station Information. APRS can be used to transmit weather information from automatic weather stations or from manual observations. This can be very handy for travelers or to see weather trends across the state and is use as part of the Citizens Weather Observer Program. Many stations in Victoria transmit weather information, these can be seen on the APRS map or on findu To enable your APRS station to send weather information you will need to obtain a weather station and software to interface into UI-View or other APRS applications.
Weather Station Tips This information is for people with weather stations that want to set the Mean Sea Level (MSL) pressure on their Barometers.I have noticed that the number of weather stations appearing on the APRS maps have increased in recent times. This is great to see but if you have a weather station is it displaying the correct information? Most of you with weather stations will have come across the problem of 'How do I find out what my MSL pressure adjustment is for my altitude?' Well after doing a bit of research and calling up the Australian Weather Bureau for conformation I have found a general guide to answer this question. For each meter you are in height above the Mean Sea Level you add .11717 millibars to your Barometric Pressure reading. So if your altitude is 500 mtrs and the local pressure is 960mb add 58.59mbs (.11717 * 500) to your reading to get the MSL pressure of 1018.59mb. Most weather stations these days have an offset you can program into them so that the will always display the MLS pressure. There are other general guides on where to place you weather sensors etc. but most of the time these are mentioned in the weather station hardware manual.
